What I did with my lawn and a similar situation was to take the square shovel and come in from the sidewalk level, sloping up over ~12", cutting out a wedge shape so that the edge of the lawn next to sidewalk would be level, gradually sloping up to the level of the rest of the lawn.. How was the grass growing over the sidewalk? Was it good.
